Mike Ness: Cancer Survivor, Punk Icon, New Grandfather

Social Distortion's eighth studio album, 'Born to Kill,' is set for release on May 8. The album's creation was significantly impacted by frontman Mike Ness's diagnosis with stage 1 tonsil cancer in April 2023, which led to a year-long postponement of recording sessions.

Ness, who has since received a clean bill of health and embraced fatherhood as a grandfather, described the cancer battle as challenging but ultimately curable. He shared his gratitude for his positive outcome, contrasting it with other cancer patient experiences.

The new album, 'Born to Kill,' explores themes of defiance and a look back at nearly five decades of the band's career, originating from Fullerton, California. Ness drew inspiration from his early influences and a desire to connect with younger generations through rock and roll history.

'Born to Kill' features guest appearances from artists like Lucinda Williams and Benmont Tench, and includes a cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game." Ness also expressed admiration for Oasis's songwriting after a recent concert experience.

Looking ahead, Ness indicated that more music is already in the works, including another Social Distortion studio album and solo projects, showcasing his continued dedication to his craft.
