Miguel Gomes, acclaimed for his Cannes Best Director award for 'Grand Tour,' is bringing his long-cherished project, 'Savagery,' to the market at the upcoming Cannes Festival. Paris-based Luxbox will handle pre-sales for the film, which was first announced in 2020 and is currently in pre-production.
Set against the backdrop of Brazil's Northeast, 'Savagery' will depict the intense conflict of 1896-97 between the inhabitants of Canudos and the Brazilian Republic's army. The film is an adaptation of Euclides da Cunha's foundational work of modern Brazilian literature, 'Rebellion in the Backlands.'
Producers describe working with Gomes as an adventure that involves inventing new filmmaking methods and taking risks. The film is lead produced by Portugal's Uma Pedra no Sapato, with co-production partners from Brazil, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and China.
'Savagery' delves into a powerful story of faith, war, repression, and resistance. It was previously included in the Locarno Festival's 2020 Films After Tomorrow section, which supported projects affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
