Summary
- John S. Middleton amassed a major American art collection.
- Exhibitions showcase loaned pieces from the Middleton family.
- The collection rivals that of Crystal Bridges Museum.

John S. Middleton, the principal owner of the Philadelphia Phillies, has unveiled his and his wife Leigh's exceptional private collection of American art. Regarded as one of the finest in private hands, it rivals the holdings of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
Approximately 120 sculptures, furniture pieces, artifacts, and paintings are now publicly exhibited in Philadelphia through "A Nation of Artists." These exhibitions feature loaned works by renowned artists such as Albert Bierstadt, Charles Willson Peale, Thomas Eakins, and Jackson Pollock.
The Middletons' collecting journey began with modest acquisitions, escalating significantly in 2006 with the purchase of a Charles Willson Peale portrait. Their anonymity, maintained for decades, began to dissipate with major philanthropic donations and John Middleton's public role with the Phillies.
The dual-venue exhibition, running through July 5, 2027, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and through September 5, 2027, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, offers an expansive view of American art, challenging traditional categories and highlighting diverse artistic expressions.
