- A major ABC executive change led to the spin-off's cancellation.
- The spin-off would have followed Sue Heck in Chicago saving a hotel.

A spin-off series centered on Sue Heck from the ABC sitcom The Middle was in development but ultimately cancelled. Actress Eden Sher confirmed the project, titled "Sue in the City," was set to be a futuristic story following Sue's adventures in Chicago. The series would have seen Sue working to save a run-down hotel, with her best friend Brad Bottig and husband Sean Donahue also slated to appear. Sher described the concept as having a "Kimmy Schmidt vibe" but less dark.
The pilot episode was filmed, and Sher expressed high hopes for its greenlighting, stating she "loved every second" of production. However, the spin-off was ultimately scrapped due to a "huge regime change" at ABC. The executives who had supported The Middle were reportedly ousted, leading to the cancellation of initiatives like the Sue Heck series. Sher has continued her acting career since The Middle concluded in 2018, most recently appearing in a Hallmark Channel holiday film.
