Young Filmmakers Shine on the Big Screen

In Royal Oak, Michigan, approximately 50 elementary and middle school students recently experienced their cinematic debut on the big screen. They were finalists in a competition where they created their own movie trailers inspired by the fantasy novel "Phases of the Moon."

The initiative was a partnership between Folktellers Studios, a producer of family-focused content, and Emagine Entertainment. This program engaged over 1,300 students, aiming to ignite creativity and enhance literacy skills by having participants adapt the same novel.

Heritage Elementary School in Stockbridge secured the first-place prize, with Addams Elementary in Royal Oak and another Heritage Elementary team earning second and third place, respectively. The young directors wrote, filmed, and edited trailers, showcasing their unique interpretations of the book's themes.

Judges, including film critic Terri Lee Chandler and Emagine Entertainment Chairman Emeritus Paul Glantz, praised the students' imagination and the quality of their films. Following the awards, attendees viewed a pilot episode of a new streaming series based on the "Excerpts from an Unknown Guidebook" series.

Folktellers Studio aims to immerse children in stories, drawing parallels to the Marvel Universe to counter the effects of short-form digital content. This effort also addresses Michigan's literacy rankings, with co-owner Steven Sadler emphasizing the cause's personal importance due to his own struggles with dyslexia.
