Summary
- Michelle Gomez will play Nurse Ratched on stage.
- The production explores colonialism and silencing dissent.
- Patients are cast as African Americans for deeper metaphor.

Glasgow-born actress Michelle Gomez, 58, is stepping into the formidable shoes of Nurse Ratched for a stage production of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.' This role, famously depicted by Louise Fletcher in the 1975 film, centers on Randle P McMurphy's rebellion against the psychiatric institution's oppressive authority.
Gomez, celebrated for her roles in 'Doctor Who' and 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,' discussed her character's representation of 'the combine,' a societal force that oppresses and judges those who don't conform. The upcoming stage adaptation at London's Old Vic theatre will offer a novel perspective.
Director Clint Dyer explained his vision for the production, describing it as 'a searing exploration of colonialism and the social structures built to silence dissent.' Dyer is casting the patients as African Americans, believing this dimension of race enhances the metaphor, particularly in light of contemporary issues surrounding America's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) department. This approach aims to highlight societal oppression and the consequences of non-conformity.
