Summary

- The play opens in Cardiff in March 2027, then London.
- This production marks a significant collaboration between Welsh actors.

Michael Sheen will star as Antonio Salieri in a revival of Peter Shaffer's acclaimed play, Amadeus. Callum Scott Howells is set to portray Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This production, directed by Jeremy Herrin, is a co-production between Second Half Productions and Welsh National Theatre. It is slated to open at New Theatre Cardiff in March 2027, followed by a 16-week run at London's Noël Coward Theatre starting in April. This marks the first major West End staging for the Welsh National Theatre, founded by Sheen.
This revival is notable as it features two Welsh actors in the lead roles of Salieri and Mozart for the first time. Sheen, who previously played Salieri in Sydney and Mozart in the late 1990s, expressed that the production is a "full-circle moment" and feels "very special" to be performing alongside Howells. Howells described the opportunity to play Mozart as a "dream come true". The play is set in 1820s Vienna and explores Salieri's intense jealousy and rivalry with Mozart.
