The 43rd edition of the Miami Film Festival, concluding on April 20, 2026, expanded to 11 days to better accommodate its growing slate of films. Festival executive director James Woolley highlighted the event's success in attracting major filmmakers and audiences to its seaside location.
The festival honored notable figures including Adam Scott and Bob Odenkirk, who presented their latest projects. The program featured a tribute to director John Waters for his 80th birthday. Sonia Manzano, known for her role as Maria on Sesame Street, received the festival's Impact Award for her documentary 'Street Smart: Lessons From a TV Icon.'
Reflecting its diverse community, the festival prominently featured films with Latin American connections. Uruguayan, Cuban, Argentinian, Venezuelan, Peruvian, and Dominican filmmakers presented works, including documentaries on Cuba and its political figures, like Alina Fernández Revuelta, daughter of Fidel Castro.
Festival programmers strategically select guests by aligning with theatrical release dates, ensuring a prime window for promotion before extensive studio obligations. This approach proved successful for films like 'Normal' and 'Hokum.' The festival's programming director, Lauren Cohen, emphasized the value of documentaries in sparking post-screening conversations.
Miami Film Festival organizers believe that unique experiences, filmmaker interactions, and special events effectively compete with home streaming services, driving increasing attendance. They attribute this growth to the festival's distinct appeal and the audience's desire for shared cultural experiences.
