La México: From Bullfights to Mega Concerts

The Monumental Plaza de Toros La México has successfully reinvented itself, transitioning from its decades-long history of bullfighting to becoming a premier venue for musical concerts. Following a midyear law reform in Mexico City that banned bull-killing, the historic arena, inaugurated in 1946, has embraced a new identity. In 2025, it hosted 19 shows, drawing a crowd of over 600,000 people and solidifying its status as a sought-after entertainment hub.

Under the direction of Mario Zulaica, the venue began consistently hosting musical acts in May 2022. This strategic shift saw a dramatic increase in activity, with 19 concerts in 2025, including Junior H's record-breaking six sold-out performances. This success has led to ambitious plans for 2026, with an estimated 40 concerts scheduled, marking the complete cessation of bullfighting events.

The plaza's circular design, reminiscent of traditional palenques but on a much larger scale, offers artists an intimate connection with its 42,000-capacity audience. This unique feature, combined with its historic significance, attracts a diverse range of national and international artists, from regional Mexican stars like Alfredo Olivas to global acts like Ye (formerly Kanye West), showcasing La México's chameleon-like capacity to adapt to various large-scale productions.
