Met Opera Security Lapse Allows Stage Crashers

A security guard's absence from his post led to a breach on stage during a Metropolitan Opera performance of 'Carmen' last Friday. General Manager Peter Gelb confirmed that one of two assigned guards was not present, allowing two individuals to access the stage and momentarily halt the show. This incident has prompted a review of security measures at the opera house.

The protesters, part of a larger group, aimed to denounce the late billionaire industrialist David Koch, a significant arts benefactor whose name adorns a nearby theater. While two protesters shouted from the audience, two others made it onto the stage. Security personnel removed the stage intruders, and audience members drowned out those in the seats.

Three protesters were arrested by the New York City Police Department on misdemeanor charges, with one escaping apprehension. Gelb has suspended the absent guard pending investigation and has vowed to enhance security to ensure the stage is not breached again, aiming to provide a safe environment for performers and attendees.
