Summary
- Fashion exhibition pairs art with garments.
- Thematic body types explore diverse human forms.
- Exhibition argues fashion is art like painting or sculpture.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is set to unveil "Costume Art," a spring fashion exhibition opening on May 10th. This exhibition will feature a compelling juxtaposition of nearly 200 sculptures, drawings, and other artworks alongside approximately 200 garments and accessories from the museum's Costume Institute.
The collection is meticulously organized into 13 distinct "thematic body types," designed to examine fashion's interaction with a wide spectrum of human forms. These categories aim to include bodies that have not traditionally been celebrated in Western culture, focusing on aspects such as tattoos, plus-size figures, pregnancy, and the signs of aging.
Curator Andrew Bolton emphasizes that fashion, due to its inherent connection to the body, deserves to be recognized as a serious aesthetic study. The exhibition aims to demonstrate that fashion's intrinsic relationship with the human form elevates it to a status equivalent to painting or sculpture.
