In September 2024, French actress Audrey Fleurot announced her plans to star in a feminist reimagining of Alexandre Dumas's classic novel The Count of Monte Cristo. Set in Marseille in 1815, the new series features Fleurot as Mercédès Herrera, a heroine ready to do anything for the man she loves, Edmond Dantès, a sailor with a bright future.
When Edmond is imprisoned on the basis of false testimony, with no hope of release, the intrepid Mercédès tries to break him out of jail. Tragically, Edmond is killed during their escape attempt, and Mercédès herself finds herself imprisoned. Her new mission will be to take revenge on those who destroyed her life: her own cousin Fernand, who is secretly in love with her; the ambitious manipulator Danglars; and above all, Héloïse de Villefort, the implacable wife of the town prosecutor.
Fleurot is co-producing the series under her production company Bahia Blanca, alongside Itinéraire Productions, the team behind her previous hit show HPI. The series is being directed by Djibril Glissant and Leonardo D'Antoni, with shooting taking place in Malta and the Czech Republic. TF1 is backing the series in association with Netflix, and Fleurot has expressed her excitement and trepidation about this new project, which she has followed closely from start to finish.
