A unique immersive attraction in Memphis, "Baron Von Opperbean and the River of Time," has welcomed over 10,000 visitors in its initial three months. This ambitious project, blending interactive art with an unfolding story, has drawn guests from 46 U.S. states and at least 10 countries since opening on May 1, 2026. The success is a key milestone for organizers seeking further investment.
Conceived by Memphis artist Christopher Reyes, the attraction currently occupies 8,000 square feet within a former museum space on Mud Island. Organizers aim to expand it to 33,000 square feet, incorporating historical elements like a warship and riverboat prow. The project's first phase incurred approximately $1.4 million in costs.
Mayor Paul Young commended "Baron Von Opperbean" as an example of entrepreneurial creativity revitalizing public spaces and supporting local jobs. The for-profit venture has benefited from crucial city and Memphis River Parks Partnership support for infrastructure. Industry veteran Jee Vahn Knight leads the team, which includes new hire Somisawhel Mathis from Meow Wolf.
"Baron Von Opperbean" utilizes a blend of physical sets, interactive digital worlds, projection mapping, and game-engine technology. Visitors navigate a labyrinthine space designed to resemble a starship interior, engaging with animated aliens and interactive elements. Organizers hope this experience will encourage repeat visits and further investment in Mud Island.
