This fall, "Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen," a new Off-Broadway musical featuring music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik, will premiere.
The production is based on Moyoco Anno's acclaimed manga graphic novel and is thought to be the first American musical adaptation of a manga in English.
It will be staged at The Night Egg, a new venue in Chelsea's former Sleep No More space. The venue's name is inspired by a French brothel from the original Japanese novel, suggesting a unique immersive experience.
Directed and choreographed by Tony winner Rob Ashford, with a book by Leah Nanako Winkler, the musical tells the story of Colette, a writer in 20th-century Paris who finds her voice at an elusive establishment called Night Egg. She chronicles her clients' fantasies and sorrows, transforming perversions into art.
The manga "Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen" was serialized from 2013 to 2018 and received an Excellence Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2020. Further details on casting and specific dates are forthcoming.
