Melissa Auf der Maur, formerly the bassist for Hole and the Smashing Pumpkins, has shared a profound personal revelation in her memoir, 'Even the Good Girls Will Cry.' After 25 years, she details her father's assisted death in April 1998, a difficult decision following his battle with throat cancer. She explains that this experience was a defining moment that made her an adult woman.
Auf der Maur joined Hole in 1994, weeks after the overdose death of bassist Kristen Pfaff. This was shortly after the band released their album 'Live Through This,' amidst the intense grief and turmoil surrounding Courtney Love’s widowhood after Kurt Cobain's suicide. Auf der Maur described Love as a "raging, rolling tornado."
Despite initial reservations about major labels and fame's corrupting influence, Auf der Maur was persuaded by Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins to join Hole. She felt a sense of destiny in joining a band fronted by Love, aiming to create music about complex women for a receptive audience.
After leaving Hole at their peak, Auf der Maur joined the Smashing Pumpkins for a world tour. During this period, she began a relationship with Dave Grohl, Nirvana’s drummer, who had a known feud with Courtney Love. Their relationship, however, concluded as their life paths diverged.
Auf der Maur now resides in Hudson, New York, with her husband and daughter. She is also releasing a photo book and exhibition of her 90s photography, alongside a new musical project. Her relationship with Courtney Love is reportedly at its best, with Auf der Maur expressing pride in Love's continued evolution.
