Mel Gibson's ambitious two-part film event, "The Resurrection of the Christ," is set to premiere in 2027 and 2028, expanding upon the traditional narratives of the Gospels. Gibson explained that the synoptic Gospels, while informative, do not contain every detail of Jesus's life and teachings. He plans for his films to explore these "synoptic" gaps, offering supplemental narratives.
The director revealed that the films' scope is expansive, beginning with the fall of angels and venturing into realms such as hell and Sheol, the Old Testament underworld. Gibson indicated that the narrative will jump between different time periods and locations, including the firmament before creation and different states of hell, to provide a comprehensive retelling.
"The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One" is slated for release on May 6, 2027, coinciding with Ascension Day. "Part Two" will follow on May 25, 2028, also on Ascension Day and Memorial Day weekend. Lionsgate will handle distribution in North America and the UK, with other international partners managing releases in various territories.
