Simon Evans, 63, has dedicated almost 900 hours to meticulously crafting and painting a scale model of a medieval crooked house. This detailed replica is located in a picturesque Suffolk village. Evans began model building during the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown, initially recreating buildings in Essex.
Having been born in Sudbury, Evans was aware of the nearby village of Lavenham, renowned for its medieval architecture. He chose to recreate the De Vere House, which featured in the Harry Potter films, completing it in December. His most recent project is the iconic Crooked House, which he recently finished.
Evans primarily uses balsa wood and clay for his creations. He explained that he has always been creative and revisited model building after focusing on cars and motorbikes. The Crooked House, dating from 1395, was not originally crooked but warped as its wood dried. It is now one of the world's most photographed homes.
Evans introduced himself to the owners of the Crooked House, who allowed him to take pictures for his model. He incorporated the interiors of both the Crooked House and De Vere House into his models, significantly increasing the work involved. The owners were delighted with the model, and Evans received widespread praise on social media.
Evans is currently assembling a collection of these models, focusing on those from Lavenham. His plan is to exhibit them in Lavenham after completing the Guildhall and possibly one more. He is open to future exhibition or sales opportunities but currently enjoys the creative process.
