McConaughey Nearly Played Joel in The Last of Us

Matthew McConaughey recently shared that he was considered for the pivotal role of Joel in HBO's "The Last of Us." The Emmy-nominated actor ultimately turned down the part, stating that his priorities were elsewhere at the time, focusing more on writing and leadership opportunities. He reminisced about his successful collaboration on "True Detective" and how it was a significant achievement for actors of his caliber to engage in television series. McConaughey acknowledged the quality of "The Last of Us" but reiterated it was not for him then.

Craig Mazin, the creator of "The Last of Us," had previously indicated that discussions with McConaughey about the role were not highly serious. Mazin suggested that while McConaughey would have been excellent, the show would have featured a different iteration of the character. The role of Joel, the smuggler tasked with escorting a young girl across a post-apocalyptic America, was ultimately given to Pedro Pascal. Pascal's performance garnered him an Emmy nomination, and the series itself was recognized with outstanding drama series nominations.

McConaughey is currently promoting his new thriller, "The Rivals of Amziah King," marking his return to live-action roles after "The Gentlemen" in 2019. He reflected on the commitment required for a television series, noting that a single film like "Rivals" allows for more focused decision-making. He also recently reunited with his "True Detective" co-star Woody Harrelson for the Apple TV+ series "Brothers," where they portrayed fictionalized versions of themselves.
