A significant revival of Eric Bentley's 1972 play, 'Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been,' is scheduled for an Off-Broadway engagement at New York City Center Stage I. This docudrama delves into the tense atmosphere of the 1940s House Committee on Un-American Activities hearings, where careers were jeopardized by political pressure. The production will commence its 15-week run on Tuesday, June 2.
Utilizing only the original transcripts, the play brings to life the words of artists like Arthur Miller and Paul Robeson as they navigated intense questioning and moral conflicts. A notable aspect of this revival is its starry, rotating cast, which will include actors such as David Krumholtz, Billy Eugene Jones, Andrew McCarthy, Sally Murphy, Jay O. Sanders, Michael McKean, Santino Fontana, T.R. Knight, Harry Lennix, Bob Odenkirk, Steven Pasquale, and Molly Ringwald.
The design team, led by Anna D. Shapiro as director, comprises Andrew Boyce (Scenic), Johanna Pan (Costume), Donald Holder (Lighting), Milbo Music (Sound), and Brittany Bland (Projections). The production, led by producers Jeffrey Richards, Rebecca Gold, and Ira Pittelman, will also host post-show talkbacks featuring artists and cultural leaders following select performances.
