This victory marked him as the first male actor to win in two distinct Lead Actor categories on the same night, having previously won for a drama role. Rhys dedicated his win to "Widow's Bay" creator Katie Dippold, expressing gratitude for her "genius."

In his acceptance speech, the 51-year-old actor extended thanks to his agent of 33 years, Dallas Smith, his parents, and his sister. He also gave a special shout-out to the people of Wales, his native country, describing them as a "small but mighty nation." Rhys's win in the comedy category saw him compete against notable actors like Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Steve Carell, Jason Segel, and Martin Short. He had previously won an Emmy in 2018 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his work on "The Americans."
