Summary
- Matthew McConaughey's son Levi asked why his mother didn't have the same last name at age 4
- McConaughey sought advice from a pastor about the "bigger risk" of marriage
- Levi later auditioned for a role as McConaughey's onscreen son

In September 2025, acclaimed actor Matthew McConaughey, now 55 years old, appeared on the 1,000th episode of the Modern Wisdom podcast. During the interview, he reflected on moments in his life when he felt courageous, including a conversation with his young son Levi about marriage.
McConaughey explained that when Levi was just 4 years old, he innocently asked his father why his mother, Camila Alves McConaughey, didn't have the same last name as him and his dad. This unexpected question prompted McConaughey to seek advice from his pastor and other experienced married men. His pastor posed a thought-provoking question: "What's the bigger risk? Carrying on like you're going and it's going well, or taking the deeper dive into the sacramental covenant of marriage?" After considering this, McConaughey realized that getting married was the bigger risk, a decision he ultimately made in 2012 after meeting Camila at a nightclub in 2006.
McConaughey's son Levi, now 17 years old, has also followed in his father's footsteps, auditioning for a role as McConaughey's onscreen son in the survival thriller The Lost Bus. Despite initially being hesitant, McConaughey agreed to let Levi audition, and the director was impressed, casting him in the part.
