Mattel Studios Unleashes Blockbuster Toy Adaptations, from Polly Pocket to Masters of the Universe

Mattel Studios is poised to make a major splash in the entertainment industry, with a jam-packed slate of film and TV adaptations of its iconic toy brands. In a recent interview, Mattel Studios President Robbie Brenner discussed the company's ambitious plans, which include a Polly Pocket live-action movie starring Lily Collins and produced by Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine, as well as a Masters of the Universe adaptation directed by Travis Knight and featuring Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, and Idris Elba.

Brenner also revealed that Ayo Edebiri has penned a script for a Barney movie, produced by Daniel Kaluuya, and that Wicked director Jon M. Chu is working on a live-action Hot Wheels film for Warner Bros. Additionally, Mattel has announced a Magic 8 Ball TV series, with M. Night Shyamalan set to direct and Brad Falchuk writing the pilot.

Brenner credits the blockbuster success of Greta Gerwig's 2023 Barbie film, which grossed over $1.4 billion globally and became a cultural phenomenon, for "blowing the doors open" for Mattel in Hollywood. "People realize, 'Okay, Mattel is here.' We're a force," she said. "Everything is not going to be Barbie, but at the same time, we mean business. We want to tell great stories."

With a diverse slate of projects in the works, Mattel is poised to continue its momentum in the entertainment industry, leveraging its iconic brands and collaborating with top talent to bring its beloved toys to life on the big and small screens.
