Actor Matt Dillon has launched his inaugural solo art exhibition, "Porto Novo to Abomey," at The Journal Gallery in New York. The exhibition, which opened on Friday, April 24, showcases a collection of spontaneous paintings created during and after his travels through West Africa.
The body of work is deeply influenced by a 100-mile journey through Benin, drawing inspiration from the region's vibrant textiles, distinctive architecture, and evocative landscapes. These pieces represent a significant milestone in Dillon's decade-long transition from a career in acting to that of a visual artist.
Dillon's artistic practice is characterized by instinct rather than formal training, a method honed since he established his first studio in 2016. The exhibition emphasizes impression over literal documentation, with co-founder Michael Nevin noting the art conveys "the feeling behind the work." Partner Julia Dippelhofer describes Dillon as a "sponge" during his travels, collecting materials that fuel his creative process.
This exhibition is not Dillon's first exploration of African creative history; it reflects a sustained interest that has also appeared in his study of rumba and his documentary on Afro-Cuban jazz pioneers. "Porto Novo to Abomey" is on view in New York through May 23.
