Matt Barnes recently opened up about his past anger issues and the notorious confrontation with ex-teammate Derek Fisher on the show 'Special Forces: World's Toughest Test.' Barnes explained that his public persona as an NBA 'bad boy' was influenced by his mixed-race background and experiences with racism growing up in California. He detailed how experiencing discrimination, including vandalism at his high school by the KKK, shaped his fiery temper and his willingness to defend teammates. This defense-oriented mindset, he noted, cost him financially through league fines but was a principle he stood by.
The infamous physical altercation between Barnes and Fisher occurred on October 3, 2015. Reports indicated the fight began over Fisher's relationship with Barnes' estranged wife, Gloria Govan, whom Barnes had driven to confront. Barnes later clarified he was only a short drive away and was concerned about his children's discomfort with Fisher's presence. The NBA suspended Barnes for two games and fined him $35,000 for his role and subsequent comments.
Despite the past conflict, Barnes revealed in 2021 that he and Fisher had reconciled. This reconciliation was primarily driven by the need to coparent their twin sons. Barnes stated they now communicate and interact amicably, even attending family events together. Govan and Fisher later married in July 2021 but separated in 2026.
