Lead singer Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty recently caused an onstage accident during a performance at the Illinois State Fair. While swinging his microphone stand, Thomas accidentally struck guitarist Paul Doucette in the head.
The impact not only hurt Doucette but also completely smashed his in-ear monitors. Video footage captured the moment of the incident, showing Thomas's remorse immediately after.
Thomas expressed deep regret, telling the crowd he felt terrible and had nearly injured his "best friend in the world." He even declared that he would stop swinging the mic stand.
Doucette, however, took the mishap in stride. He returned to the stage with a drink, humorously telling the crowd he had been warning Thomas about swinging the mic stand for 30 years.
Later, on the band's tour bus, Doucette showed the extent of the injury, with pieces of his in-ear monitors being removed from his ear with tweezers. The band is scheduled for upcoming North American shows and will celebrate their debut album's anniversary this fall.
