Censored Russian Film 'Master & Margarita' Finally Hits US Screens

Michael Lockshin's Russian-language adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's "The Master and Margarita" is set for a U.S. theatrical release on September 18th, 2026. This highly anticipated film, based on Bulgakov's classic novel, tells the story of a writer in 1930s Moscow who faces censorship and writes a new novel where the Devil appears. Filmed before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the movie's themes of censorship and resistance were deemed too controversial by Russian authorities, leading to criticism of both the film and its director.

Despite official opposition, Lockshin's film achieved immense success at the Russian box office, becoming the highest-grossing 18+ release in the country's history. Its international rollout faced complications due to sanctions against Russia and complex legal battles over distribution rights. These obstacles have now been cleared, allowing the film to be screened in the U.S. following releases in several European territories. Luminosity Pictures will distribute Lockshin's restored director's cut, aiming to honor Bulgakov's original work.
