Marvel Star's Sepsis Scare Sparks Lifelong Sobriety

In November 2025, Marvel actor Jaimie Alexander, who plays Lady Sif, revealed that a life-threatening medical emergency in 2018 was the catalyst for her sobriety journey.

Three years ago, in March 2018, Alexander's appendix burst, leading to a severe case of sepsis. Prior to this, she had been struggling with alcoholism for years, "drinking heavily" and making "terrible decisions." However, the actress says the turning point came a few days earlier when she was snowed in on a trip with a sober partner, unable to access any alcohol. This "absolute hell" experience made her realize she had a serious problem.

After returning home, Alexander found herself physically unable to drink a glass of bourbon, despite her intense cravings. The next day, she fell ill on the set of her TV show Blindspot, and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered her appendix had ruptured. During the emergency surgery, Alexander had a profound experience, hearing a "warm, powerful" voice tell her she could never drink again if she wanted to survive. She made that promise and has remained sober ever since.

"Looking back, what I thought was bad and the worst thing to ever happen to me ended up being good and the best thing that ever happened to me," Alexander reflected. She now encourages others facing difficulties to seek help and find the inner strength to overcome their challenges.
