Marvel Comics Leaves NYC for Hollywood

After almost 90 years, Marvel Comics is relocating its publishing division from New York City to Burbank, California. This move places the comics operations alongside Marvel Studios and its parent company, The Walt Disney Company. The transition is accompanied by new leadership, with veteran editor Stephen Wacker appointed as the new editor-in-chief, succeeding C.B. Cebulski. Cebulski will transition to spearhead Marvel's manga initiatives in Japan.

The relocation is designed to reinvigorate the comics division, which has been overshadowed by the success of Marvel's cinematic universe. By consolidating operations in Burbank, Marvel aims to create more opportunities for collaboration across its film, television, and publishing units. This integration is expected to foster cross-pollination of ideas and strengthen the company's storytelling foundation.

The decision to leave New York City, considered the birthplace of the comic book industry and Marvel's early homes, was driven by several factors. The expiration of the current New York office lease next year made a relocation necessary. Additionally, Marvel sought to unify its various businesses under one roof, a goal that has been pursued since Disney's acquisition in 2009.

Marvel is offering over 100 New York-based employees the opportunity to relocate to California by July 2027. The company is committed to supporting affected employees through this transition, which will unfold over the next 12 months. Stephen Wacker, returning to Marvel, brings extensive experience in comics editing and animation, having overseen numerous successful runs and Emmy-nominated projects.
