Fashion Enigma Margiela Sells Personal Treasures

Martin Margiela, a pivotal figure in late 20th-century fashion known for deconstruction and upcycling, is offering his personal archive for auction in Paris. This collection of nearly 200 items spans his influential career, from early sketches for the Golden Thimble competition in the 1980s to his tenure as the women's wear creative director at Hermès. Margiela himself selected each piece, including clothing, look books, invitations, and photographs, and provided accompanying documentation.

The auction provides a unique glimpse into the mind of a designer who famously shunned the spotlight, rarely appearing in public or giving interviews. His white working smock, stained with paint and ink, and the iconic 1991 Tabi graffiti boots are among the notable items. The sale also includes Barbie and Ken dolls he dressed, reflecting his early creative joy.

A significant portion of the sale features pieces from Hermès, curated from the wardrobe of his mother, Léa Bouchet. These items, including a belted beige cotton trench and a cashmere tunic and trousers set, showcase his signature approach to understated luxury and reflect a strong maternal influence. This event marks a significant moment for fashion collectors and institutions worldwide.

This auction was reportedly initiated by Margiela himself, following the extraordinary success of a previous sale of his work in 2025, which far exceeded expectations. The designer, who transitioned to art in 2021, is managing his legacy through this sale, especially given his lack of heirs. Experts anticipate strong interest from private collectors and museums, viewing these items as crucial cultural and historical artifacts.
