Actor Martin Freeman has spoken openly about his past romantic failures, admitting that experiencing loneliness within a relationship, even when inexplicable, signals a problem. He shared these insights on the 'How to Fail with Elizabeth Day' podcast.
Freeman, who starred in 'The Hobbit' trilogy, separated from actress Amanda Abbington in 2016 after a 16-year partnership. They met in 2000 and worked together on several projects, including 'Sherlock.' They share two children, Joe and Grace.
Regarding his current relationship with French actress Rachel Benaissa, which began in 2020, Freeman acknowledged that uncomfortable emotions are a natural part of any partnership. He noted that his extended filming absences for 'The Hobbit' were cited by Abbington as a factor in their breakup.
Freeman also suggested that people often suppress doubts in relationships out of misplaced loyalty. He has since learned to remember that his partner may also be experiencing similar internal struggles.
His co-parenting relationship with Abbington remains civil. Benaissa has reportedly bonded well with Freeman's children and is involved in their shared production company, One Trick Poné.
