Mark Ruffalo Denies Antisemitism, Cites Free Speech

Mark Ruffalo has strongly refuted claims of antisemitism, labeling the accusations as "appalling and fundamentally dishonest." The actor clarified that his criticisms are directed at specific actions, such as military technology contracts and the executives involved, rather than targeting Jewish people. He emphasized his profound respect and love for the Jewish community, highlighting the significant influence of his Jewish friends and colleagues throughout his life.

This controversy arose after Ruffalo criticized Oracle's business dealings with the Israeli military, referencing the company's ties to the father of Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison. Ruffalo had previously denounced Safra Catz, Oracle's executive vice chair, for discussing "profoundly scary technologies" provided to the Israeli government, which he described as a "genocide."

Paramount Skydance responded by stating they were "troubled when antisemitic tropes are invoked in purported service of a business dispute." Ruffalo countered this by denouncing the accusations and criticizing Paramount's significant effort to acquire Warner Bros.

In support of Ruffalo, 170 Jewish artists published an open letter, and George Clooney defended his right to free speech. Clooney stated, "I believe in free speech even when I completely disagree with it. That's important. In fact, it's part of how democracy works."
