The "Mario" franchise now joins "Shrek," "Despicable Me," and "Frozen" as the only animated series to achieve multiple $100 million-plus opening weekends. Globally, "Super Mario Galaxy" is nearing the $377 million opening of its predecessor, "Super Mario Bros."
Internationally, Mexico emerged as the top market with a $29.1 million 5-day opening, marking the fourth highest opening for a Hollywood film in the country. Other strong international performances came from the U.K., Germany, France, and Spain, all exceeding $10 million for their opening weekends.
