Goa is celebrating the birth centenary of its beloved artist, Mario Miranda, through a special tribute art camp. Twelve artists from across the state have converged at the directorate of art and culture to create artworks inspired by Miranda's legacy. For many, like artist Hanuman Kambli, the experience is deeply emotional, recalling shared conversations with the gentleman artist.
The initiative seeks to strengthen the appreciation for art and culture within Goa. Vivek Naik, director of art and culture, highlighted Miranda's significant contribution to capturing everyday life with honesty and charm, noting his enduring inspiration to artists.
Participants are reinterpreting Miranda's work through their distinct artistic lenses. Artists like Chaitali Morajkar blend his whimsical style with personal themes rooted in Goan culture, while Julio D'Souza adapts caricature themes into his own framework. The recurring motifs in the new artworks include elements of Goan life, such as its people, architecture, fish, roosters, and local celebrations, reflecting both the region's heritage and Miranda's deep connection to it.
The collaborative art camp will culminate on May 2 with a public exhibition where the tribute artworks will be displayed, offering a platform to further celebrate and preserve Miranda's influential artistic spirit. Other participating artists include Nirupa Naik, Francis De Souza, Rajeshree Thakker, Vitesh Naik, Rajesh Salgaonkar, Shripad Gurav, Hitesh Pankar, and Sandesh Naik.
