Bengaluru is set to honor the centenary of the renowned cartoonist Mario Miranda with a special exhibition. Running from May 2 to May 23 at the Indian Cartoon Gallery on MG Road, the event will display over 110 of his artworks. This collection includes beloved characters such as Miss Nimbupani and Miss Fonseca, alongside illustrations from 'The Open Eyes: A Journey through Karnataka.'
Mario Miranda was celebrated for his humorously detailed depictions of urban life, capturing the spirit of places like Mumbai and Goa. His unique style, filled with lively characters, offered affectionate social commentary. He maintained a long association with The Times Group, with his work frequently appearing in The Times of India and The Illustrated Weekly of India.
The Indian Institute of Cartoonists organized the exhibition. V G Narendra, founder of the IIC, highlighted Miranda's international fame, his supportive role in establishing the IIC, and his personal connections within the cartooning fraternity. Miranda had previously held a major exhibition in Bengaluru in 2009 and collaborated on a state government-commissioned book about Karnataka.
Contemporary artists, like Bengaluru-based Paul Fernandes, acknowledge Miranda's profound influence, noting how he transcended language and intellectual barriers through his art. The exhibition, open daily from 10 am to 6 pm (closed Sundays and public holidays), offers free entry to the public.
