Marathi Theater Icon Daya Dongre Dies at 85

Daya Dongre, a renowned Marathi stage and screen actor, passed away last month at the age of 85 following age-related complications. Her death marks the end of an era in Marathi entertainment, as she leaves behind a legacy cherished by generations of theater lovers and film audiences.

Dongre was widely admired for her expressive performances and commanding screen presence. Actor Nitish Bharadwaj, who had the privilege of working with her early in his career, paid an emotional tribute, describing Dongre as his "second mother" and remembering her warmth, kindness, and unwavering guidance both on and off the set.

Born in Amravati, Maharashtra, in 1940, Dongre came from a family deeply rooted in the arts. She first showcased her talent by winning an All India Radio singing competition and took to the stage at just 16 with the play Rambha. Even after taking a break for marriage, she continued to pursue her passion with the full support of her husband, Sharad.

Dongre soon became a prominent name in Marathi theater and cinema, admired for her authenticity and ability to bring emotional depth to every role. Her performances in 'Tuzhi Majhi Jodi Jamli Re' and 'Lekure Udand Jali' were particularly celebrated, earning her both critical praise and audience affection. She rose to national prominence with Doordarshan's Gajara and became a familiar face across Marathi and Hindi entertainment for her memorable portrayals of strong-willed mother-in-law characters in films like 'Maaybaap' and 'Atmavishwas'.
