Filmmaker Manisha Makwana is experiencing a mix of excitement and anxiety as her short film, Gudgudi, prepares for its screening at the Cannes Film Festival. The film will be showcased in the prestigious March du Film segment, a significant achievement for Makwana's directorial debut.
Gudgudi is described as an "ode" to the filmmaking lessons Makwana absorbed while working with creators Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, as well as writer-director Suman Kumar. These learnings, spanning from writing to editing and visual style, profoundly shaped the short film.
The film has already garnered positive feedback from industry figures like Raj & DK, Aparna Purohit, and Rajeev Masand, who have lauded its "unique voice." Makwana also co-produced two other short films, The Pissing Tale and Dhanki Devi, also heading to Cannes.
Makwana hopes Gudgudi will eventually find a home on streaming platforms such as Jio Hotstar or Amazon, making it accessible to a global audience. The 79th Cannes Film Festival is scheduled from May 12 to May 23, 2026.
