A striking mural honoring Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, the iconic bassist of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has been unveiled in his hometown of Failsworth. Street artist Pic.One.Art dedicated 11 days to creating the large-scale artwork on the side of the La Fardy Pub, a venue frequently visited by Mounfield.
The mural features a beaming portrait of Mounfield alongside a depiction of him playing his bass guitar. This artistic tribute was brought to life through an online crowdfunding campaign organized by GRIT art studios in Manchester. The initiative not only funded the mural but also generates donations for The Maggie's Centre, a cancer charity that supported Mounfield's wife during her illness.
Mani's brother, Greg Mounfield, facilitated the project, selecting the La Fardy Pub as a fitting location due to its significance in his and his brother's shared memories. He noted the mural's prominent position on a busy main road ensures it will be seen by many.
The inspiration for the mural reportedly stemmed from a comment made by Stone Roses lead singer Ian Brown at Mounfield's funeral, suggesting a public tribute. GRIT Studios, known for public art commissions, embraced the idea, opting for street art to commemorate the musician in Failsworth.
