The "Album of the Porches: A Photographic Documentation of Mangalorean Catholic Houses" was recently released by the Mangaluru Chapter of INTACH. This 242-page publication showcases the distinct architectural tradition that has long characterized Mangaluru's Catholic community.
Led by architect Sharvani Bhat and photographer Murali Abbemane, the project meticulously documented 27 heritage homes across Mangaluru. The documentation captured their architecture, history, and associated memories, emphasizing the need for preservation.
Experts suggest that preserving these homes need not be limited to residential use. Sensitive adaptive reuse as cultural spaces, galleries, or cafes can contribute to their continued survival and relevance in modern times.
