Director Antoine Fuqua's documentary, "Troublemaker," premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2026, delves into the surprising rebel and fighter persona of Nelson Mandela. Fuqua discovered Mandela's less-publicized past, including his willingness to engage in violence for the greater good, challenging the icon's mythical image.
The film draws heavily on over 70 hours of Nelson Mandela's personal recordings to narrate the fight against apartheid. Fuqua collaborated with anti-apartheid activist Mac Maharaj, who was imprisoned with Mandela on Robben Island, to bring Mandela's story to life.
Fuqua, Maharaj, and the film crew journeyed across South Africa, visiting pivotal sites from Mandela's life. These included the University of Fort Hare, Robben Island where Mandela spent 18 years imprisoned, and his final resting place in Qunu.
