Malayalam superstar Mammootty is set to make a significant return to Tamil cinema after a seven-year hiatus. He will appear as the enigmatic smuggler Burma Karthikeyan in the Dhanush-led film 'Om - Chapter 1: Udhiram - The Blood Wood.' The character, also known as Siya or The Elder One, was revealed on Mammootty's 75th birthday through a character teaser.
Mammootty's portrayal of Siya depicts him not merely as a smuggler but as a respected figure among locals and police, hinting at a shades-of-grey persona. This marks his first Tamil film appearance since Ram's 'Peranbu' in 2019.
The action thriller is written and directed by Rajkumar Periasamy. Dhanush not only stars in the lead role but also produces the film under his Wunderbar Studios banner, alongside Shraddha Agrawal and Azmat Jagmag, with RTake Studios also backing the project. The cast includes Sai Pallavi, Sreeleela, and Naseeruddin Shah, the latter making his Tamil debut.
