Mahesh Manjrekar premiered his highly anticipated one-man play, 'Animal,' on Saturday night at the Tata Theatre. Manjrekar, who also wrote, directed, and performs in the production, admitted to feeling intense pressure on opening night, stating he had "dragons" instead of butterflies in his stomach. The play, presented by AGP World and produced by Ashvin Gidwani, delves into the struggles of Dattu, a young man from a small town chasing stardom in Mumbai.
'Animal' uses satire and pop culture references to explore how the pursuit of ambition can erode the human spirit. Manjrekar described it as a "cartoonist's take on life in the city," paying tribute to those whose dreams in Mumbai turn into nightmares. The performance featured singing, dancing, and witty observations on the country's socio-cultural fabric.
After nearly nine years of preparation, the premiere was attended by numerous personalities, including Jacqueline Fernandez, Saiee Manjrekar, and Siddharth Jadhav. Manjrekar's daughter, Saiee, expressed immense pride in her father's energetic performance. The evening concluded with a standing ovation, celebrating Manjrekar's ambitious theatrical endeavor.
