Bhandarkar Slams Bollywood's Lack of Actor Commitment
16 Mar
Summary
- Filmmaker critiques decline in song memorability and lyricist focus.
- Bhandarkar questions actor commitment to lengthy, innovative roles.
- He cites remakes and South Indian film success as an easy path.

At the Red Lorry Film Festival 2026 in Mumbai, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar expressed his views on the state of Bollywood. He lamented the decline in music standards, observing that current songs are often only remembered for brief periods, unlike older melodies that were easily recalled and sung. Bhandarkar noted that lyricists are now instructed to focus on short, catchy hooks rather than full song structures.
Furthermore, Bhandarkar criticized the lack of commitment from some Bollywood actors. He highlighted that many actors are unwilling to dedicate significant time, often two to three years, to a single innovative project. Instead, they tend to prefer shorter commitments or rely on remakes of successful South Indian films, which he views as a less adventurous approach to filmmaking.
