Maati Baani, the musical duo comprising Kartik Shah and Nirali Kartik, embarks on unique journeys into India's heartland. Armed with recording gear, they seek out musicians in remote villages to collaborate on songs, composing, performing, and recording them live on the same day. This distinctive approach is a core element of their artistic mission, distinguishing them from commissioned artists.

Their creative process involves fusing local Indian elements with international sounds. Maati Baani has partnered with over 300 musicians from more than 35 countries, often collaborating remotely. Vocalists might sing in Rajasthani while the background features European Balkan-style scores or jazz arrangements. Nirali Kartik, trained in Hindustani classical music, bases compositions on specific ragas, ensuring emotional depth and artistic integrity.

The duo recently performed in Ahmedabad, a city significant to their origins. Their concert series, 'Kahat Nayika,' debuted in March, celebrating contemporary Indian women through classical music. Nirali's original compositions explore themes of resilience and self-belief, topics rarely addressed in traditional classical repertoires. They also acknowledge the role of AI, with Kartik using it to design visual concepts for their performances.
