A Luxembourg-made horror film, "Grand Duchy Chainsaw Massacre" without the chainsaws, plunges viewers into a terrifying ordeal. The narrative follows a former couple, Greg and Anne, who travel to an unnamed Eastern European country, speaking Bulgarian, to procure a vital organ for their sick son, Leo, on the black market.
This desperate mission, facilitated by bribes and cash, quickly devolves into a nightmarish scenario. Director Cyrus Neshvad deliberately subverts audience expectations by playing with point-of-view and narrative conventions, enhancing the unsettling experience.
Cinematographer Nikos Welter skillfully employs shifting light and color palettes to build atmosphere, notably using LED lights to signify dwindling time. While the initial medical premise remains somewhat vague, the film compensates with numerous jump scares and intense performances from its cast.
