Ludhiana Neglects Iconic Poet Sahir Ludhianvi's Legacy
26 Oct
Summary
- Sahir Ludhianvi's childhood home in Ludhiana forgotten
- No memorial or public event to honor his literary contributions
- Younger generation in the area unaware of his legacy

In the narrow lanes of Field Ganj in Ludhiana, where renowned poet and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi spent his childhood as Abdul Hayee, the sounds of poetry have been lost. As of October 2025, there is little to remind anyone of one of India's greatest poets, the voice behind iconic songs like "Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein" and "Jinhe Naaz Hai Hind Par."
Sahir Ludhianvi's childhood home has changed hands multiple times, and the local residents are largely unaware of his literary legacy. Even the new library at the Punjabi Sahit Akademi that bears his name is yet to develop a dedicated section for his works. Efforts to organize literary events in his honor have also dwindled, as the younger generation in the area remains unfamiliar with his name and contributions.
Despite Ludhiana's pride in being Sahir Ludhianvi's birthplace, the city has failed to establish any memorial or public event to commemorate his impact on Indian literature and cinema. Locals and experts alike agree that more needs to be done to revive the memory of this iconic poet and ensure his words continue to inspire future generations.
