The immersive experience "The Pirate Queen: No Safe Waters," featuring the story of Chinese pirate leader Cheng Shih, is slated for an international tour starting next year. Co-created by Lucy Liu and Eloise Singer, the project expands on the Emmy-nominated VR version.
Singer, who is also a BAFTA Breakthrough U.K. inductee for 2026, described the franchise's aim to retell the impactful stories of Cheng Shih, a powerful female pirate from the early 18th century. Liu emphasizes Cheng Shih's intelligence and strategic brilliance, highlighting her defiance of traditional stereotypes for Asian women.
"No Safe Waters" utilizes projection, sound, and movement to immerse audiences, moving beyond the headset-based VR experience. Liu, who narrates, uses her voice to guide the atmosphere and movement, creating an "emotional architecture" for the audience.
Beyond the international tour, Liu and Singer have co-written a graphic novel and are developing a new game. They are committed to building "The Pirate Queen" as a comprehensive storyworld, prioritizing the integrity and scale of Cheng Shih's narrative. Singer noted a growing appetite for immersive storytelling and expressed excitement about its future.
