Artist Lucien Smith, renowned for his "Rain Paintings," passed away at 37. The New York City medical examiner's office attributed his death to an accidental overdose of fentanyl and oxycodone, as confirmed on Thursday. Smith was discovered unresponsive in Manhattan's Chinatown on September 7th, with emergency medical workers pronouncing him deceased at the scene.
In the weeks following his death, a memorial was established outside FOOD, a Chinatown restaurant co-founded by Smith. A separate memorial service was held in Montauk, where he resided and worked. Bill Powers, founder of Half Gallery, recalled Smith as his "first star" and a significant figure in his career.
Text messages revealed Smith had been struggling with anxiety, burnout, and was experiencing a "low point" weeks before his passing.
