- Photography captures revolutionary act of self-representation.

The "Birds of Mexico City" project captures a vibrant youthful revolution, using the iconic lucha libre mask as a symbol reclaimed from traditional masculinity. Photographer Pieter Henket aimed to celebrate the freedom and creativity of young people, particularly those in queer communities, allowing them to express their unique identities through culturally inspired costumes.
Collaborating with Mexican stylist Chino Castilla, the project fostered spontaneous creativity. A pivotal moment occurred when Ixchel Paz, wearing a lucha libre mask, was photographed by Henket. Paz described posing for the lens as an act of revolution, asserting diversity and celebrating her Mexican and Latina heritage with dignity and pride.
This endeavor extends beyond celebrating queer youth; it aims to showcase the universal desire for self-acceptance and representation. Henket hopes such imagery inspires young people to see themselves reflected and to embrace their own identities without fear, mirroring the fearless pride seen in the city's youth.
