Atlanta's Lowertown, comprised of Olivia Osby and Avshalom Weinberg, has released The Gaping Mouth, an EP that marks a significant departure from their bedroom pop origins. Barely out of high school themselves, the duo, who bonded over artists like The Glow Pt. 2 and Alex G, signed with Dirty Hit and have now delivered a collection that explores adolescence and the transition into adulthood.
Osby's vocals, while retaining a youthful timbre, are described as gnarlier and brattier, suited to the more freeform writing. The songwriting showcases poetic imagery and nonlinear narratives, moving beyond previous direct imitations. Surprising lyrical gems emerge, such as "You are the iris in my eye," offering cryptic metaphors.
Weinberg's instrumentation, influenced by classical, jazz, and math rock, features nimble fingerpicking and complex rhythmic changes. The music and lyrics often function independently, with Weinberg's compositions serving as loose guides for Osby's vocal delivery. This creates a distinct mood, though sometimes the delicate melodies are overshadowed.
Despite a tendency to catastrophize adulthood, Lowertown imbues their anxiety with nuance. The Gaping Mouth captures the isolating experience of leaving childhood, sounding much like adolescence itself: self-aware but not yet self-assured, offering a unique sonic landscape.
