Lost Boys Found: Island Drama Casting Secrets Revealed

Casting directors Nina Gold and Martin Ware meticulously assembled the cast for a new adaptation of William Golding's "Lord of the Flies." The series, adapted by Jack Thorne, required over 30 young actors, with the search spanning schools, drama groups, and social media.

The casting process prioritized finding boys who could embody complex characters, as the script was heavily character-driven. This meant the young actors had to carry the emotional weight of the story without adult guidance. Nina Gold highlighted that this approach is unusual, as typically an adult actor provides a point of contrast.

David McKenna, who plays Piggy, was cast late in the process after submitting a low-quality video. Ware noted McKenna's peculiar and intriguing presence, while Gold saw significant potential in his performance flashes. McKenna will also appear in "Narnia" directed by Greta Gerwig.

Ralph actor Winston Sawyers was the first to be committed, impressing with his natural authority. Lox Pratt, who plays the antagonist Jack, was tested to ensure he could convey necessary "nastiness." Even the youngest actors, aged 5-7, underwent workshops to maintain concentration and engagement in scenes.

The casting of the youngest boys, aged 5-7, proved particularly challenging due to their age. The directors had to rely on personality types, hoping they would adapt to the film set's realities without being able to scout them on location.
